Statement On Senator Warren’s Plan For Student Debt Cancellation

April 23, 2019

BOSTON – On Monday, Senator Elizabeth Warren announced her plan for “universal free public college and cancellation of student loan debt.”

The following is a statement from Toby Merrill, Director of the Project on Predatory Student Lending.

“Senator Warren’s plan to eliminate the debts of millions of former students is the right path for America and we commend her for her leadership.

We have reached a student debt crisis in our country and it requires transformational action to solve it. We urge all presidential candidates to commit to canceling the debts of former students, starting with those who attended predatory for-profit colleges, and ending federal funding for for-profit colleges.”

About the Project on Predatory Student Lending

Established in 2012, the Project on Predatory Student Lending represents former students of predatory for-profit colleges. Its mission is to litigate to make it legally and financially impossible for federally-funded predatory schools to cheat students.

The Project has brought a wide variety of cases on behalf of former students of for-profit colleges. It has sued the federal Department of Education for its failures to meet its legal obligation to police this industry and stop the perpetration and collection of fraudulent student loan debt.
